Pre-Operative Instructions for Surgery (Hospital Only)

  • Make arrangements to have someone stay with you the first night after surgery. Make sure to shop for groceries and fill prescriptions before your surgery.
  • Make arrangements to have someone drive you home after your surgery, as you will not be able to drive. Please call our office if you need travel assistance.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery. You will reduce the risk of serious complications by not eating or drinking prior to surgery.
  • Do not smoke or chew tobacco the morning of your surgery. Smoking is irritating to your lungs, makes it harder for you to recover from your operation, and increases the likelihood of pneumonia. Smoking is not permitted in the hospital or on the hospital grounds.
  • Take your usual medications with a small sip of water, unless directed otherwise.
  • If you are diabetic, please consult with your pre-op nurse.
  • Take a soapy shower or bath using unscented soap the evening or morning prior to your surgery.
  • Do not wear makeup or fingernail polish so that your color may be monitored properly.
  • Do not wear lotion, perfume, cologne, or any jewelry.
  • Bring comfortable, loose clothing to wear home.
  • Do not bring large amounts of cash, credit cards, or jewelry.
  • Children may bring a small blanket or toy from home.

It is very important to arrive at the designated time due to possible schedule changes. Expect delays in the start time of your surgery since scheduling of procedures is based on the average time for a procedure. This also allows ample time to prepare you for surgery. Your family or friends may wait with you in the pre-op area as space allows.

Please note: These instruction are general in nature and there may be additional instructions for each individual. The nurse will go over each patient’s instructions with them at their pre-surgical consult.
